Galloping Gavel

The Galloping Gavel is a traveling trophy awarded for active visitation to other Chapters around the state.  It is given to the chapter that travels the most distance with the most people to attend another Chapter’s event (not including installations).  Missouri DeMolay encourages active visitation between Chapters which in turn builds brotherhood and friendships.  The rules for the Galloping Gavel are as follows:

The host Chapter shall put the Galloping Gavel up for grabs after one (1) meeting of their receiving the trophy.  This is to ensure that the Chapter as a whole can celebrate in its glory.  The Chapter who receives the Gavel must inform the website that the trophy is in their possession.  Please let the webmaster know if you win the award.

To be awarded the Gavel, a Chapter must attend an event sponsored by the host Chapter who currently has the Gavel.  Installations are not included in these events, as all Chapters should attend installations in their area.

The visiting Chapter must bring at least two (2) DeMolays and one (1) Advisor to the event.

If there is more than one Chapter present, the Gavel is awarded to the Chapter with the highest total of this formula:

# of DeMolays attending  x   # of miles between Chapters  =  Total

State Officers do not count for this formula, as they should attend these events as much as possible anyway.  The spreadsheet of distances between Chapters can be downloaded here.  This are the official distances between CHAPTERS (which is what we will go by) as given by MapQuest.   So for example:

Kirkwood and Heart of Missouri are attending an event by the host Chapter, Frank S. Land.  Kirkwood brings four guys and Heart of Missouri brings eight members to Frank S. Land’s stated meeting.  They both of course have their Advisors with them.  The formula calculates:

Kirkwood                    4 members x 237 miles = 948

Heart of Missouri        8 members x 128 miles = 1024

Kirkwood traveled across the state while Heart of Missouri only traveled half of the state, but because Heart of Missouri brought more members than Kirkwood, they boosted their total above Kirkwood’s and would take home the Galloping Gavel.

These are the stated rules for the Galloping Gavel, if there is any question about these, please contact the current State Master Councilor.
